With an area of 743,330 square kilometres (287,000 sq mi), it is the largest island in Maritime Southeast Asia.

With a population of 135 million (excluding the 3.6 million on the island of Madura which is administered as part of the provinces of Java), Java is the worlds most populous island, and one of the most densely-populated places on the globe. Java is the home of 60 percent of the Indonesian population.

Its the largest and easternmost province of Indonesia. The province originally covered the entire western half of New Guinea. In 2003, the Indonesian government declared the westernmost part of the island, around Birds Head Peninsula, a separate province; its name was first West Irian Jaya and is now West Papua: the remaining part retained the name of Papua (province).
